What happens to copied trades when a lead trader stops?
cTrader Copy closes copied positions and realises fees; Axi keeps them linked to the signal; OKX and eToro say less. Four rules pages, side by side.

What happens to copied trades when a lead trader stops copy trading depends on the platform. cTrader Copy’s FAQ says every copied open position is closed and unrealised fees are realised. OKX lists it as a reason copying stops and says it notifies you. The Axi and eToro pages read here describe only the copier stopping.
This is an evergreen rules question, answered from the platforms’ own help pages, which this desk read on 23 September 2026: cTrader’s Copy FAQ, OKX’s copy trading FAQ and its page on managing copied trades (both marked updated 26 August 2026), Axi’s article on stopping a copy, and eToro’s CopyTrader how-it-works page.
Four platforms’ rules, side by side
| Platform (page read) | Lead trader or provider stops | You stop copying |
|---|---|---|
| cTrader Copy (FAQ) | All copied open positions closed; unrealised performance and management fees realised; status shows “stopped” | Open positions from that strategy closed automatically; unrealised fees then realised |
| OKX (FAQ; managing copied trades) | Listed as a reason copying stops; push and email notice; neither page says what happens to positions already open | Stop via My copies; parameter changes affect only new copy trades |
| Axi (stop-copying article) | Not addressed | Copied trades stay linked and close when the signal closes them, unless closed manually in MT4 or MT5 |
| eToro (CopyTrader how-it-works) | Not addressed in the text retrieved | Stop at any time; single copied trades can be closed; Copy Stop-Loss closes the whole copy |
What happens when a lead trader stops copy trading on cTrader?
The provider can stop at any time; positions then close and fees crystallise. For how those fees are set, see what a lead trader can charge, and for cTrader’s fee model against MQL5’s, our August comparison. The FAQ adds that its equity stop loss is not a guaranteed stop-out price.
Does OKX close your copied positions when a lead trader stops?
The two OKX pages read do not say. They list how a copy position does close: the lead trader closes it, a copy take-profit or stop-loss triggers, forced liquidation, or the copier closes it. OKX’s FAQ lists the United Kingdom, United States and Canada among regions where copy trading is not supported.
Why Axi’s answer runs the other way
Axi’s article says a stopping copier is “asked how you would like to manage all open trades”, yet also that trades copied earlier remain linked to the signal. The page does not reconcile the two.
Where eToro’s page goes quiet
eToro’s page covers the copier: Copy Stop-Loss defaults to 40% of the invested amount, adjustable from 5% to 95%; reallocation takes up to 7 business days, during which individual positions cannot be closed. Our CopyTrader review covers the rest.
Questions readers ask
What happens when you stop copy trading?
On cTrader Copy, stopping closes every open position copied from that strategy and realises unrealised fees. Axi’s article describes the opposite: copied trades stay linked to the signal and close only when it closes them, unless you close them manually in MT4 or MT5.
Do copied trades close when you stop copying?
On cTrader Copy, yes, automatically. On Axi, per its help article, not automatically: they stay in sync with the signal until it closes them. OKX’s page on managing copied trades explains how to stop copying but does not say whether positions already open close at that moment.
What happens if the trader I copy stops trading?
cTrader’s FAQ is the only page we read that answers in full: copied open positions close, unrealised performance and management fees are realised, and the copy shows as stopped. OKX lists it as a reason copying stops and notifies by push and email. The Axi and eToro pages read do not cover it.
Can I close a copied trade myself?
On eToro, yes: its page says you can close one copied trade without closing the whole copy. On OKX, positions can be closed from My trades, close-all at market price only, or from Futures open positions. On cTrader Copy you cannot; stopping the copy closes them all.
Copying hands someone else the timing of your exits, not the risk of them; losses stay yours, availability varies by jurisdiction, and nothing here is advice to copy anyone.
